COMMON  ERA

Common Era is a  period  of  years  which started  from 2001 to 3000 .

It is followed by Gregorian calendar.

COMMON  ERA  LITERATURE

(2021-3000)

The term  The Common  Era  Literature or Common Literature  is coined  by  the  poet  Sourav  Sarkar  on 24^th of October  2021.

World Common Literature  Day is celebrated across the globe on 24th October every year.

Poet   Sourav Sarkar  was  doing  a  long term  study  upon  ages  of  world  poetry. Then  observed    a new  genre  of  literature  which  is  already  present  in the  contemporary  world  but  no  one  has  given  stress  on   it.  While  doing  a  research   on  writing  poems,  he  invented  that  since   the  year   2001, the  mentioning  of  the CE (COMMON  ERA) was  already  in  the  history. He  started  gaining  interest  by   putting  it  into  a  literary  age  that  is  called  COMMON  ERA  LITERATURE  OR  COMMON  LITERATURE.

Poems of this period: Common  Poems, Common Era Poetry, Ordinary Poems, General poems.

Prose of this period was known as Common prose.

The story of this period was known as the Common story.

Drama of this period was known as Common drama or common plays.

Novels of this period were known as Common novels.

It  is a  study and  subject  of  research  that Common literature will develop it’s  stages   and  it  will  be discussed  gradually  through  books , articles  and Magazines. This  time :

INDIA  AND  COMMON  LITERATURE

 

Indian  literature  was influenced  by external forces. It  was  inspired  by  the  society  and  it’s  reforms.  The  effect  of  colonialism  was  dominant  in  the  years  before  independence  of  India. Anglo  Indians  wrote  lot of  literary  works  in  the  early  periods  of   Indian Literature. Toru  Dutt, Henry Louis Vivian Derozio marked the  beginning of it. The  seed  of  common literature  was there in the thinking of  the  poets of that  period. 1864  Toru Dutt  poems  and  common factors. Aurobindo Ghose edited magazines  on Indian  freedom  struggle  and  most  of  them got  influence of  common people. Sarojini  Naidu tried   to  write  common poems.  After 1868 Rabindranath  Tagore  and  his  works  are  based  on  common  people ,  ideas , society  and humanity.

His famous works that reflects common life and people  are The Golden Boat, The Post Office etc. His stories depict the everyday lives of common people.

Anglo Indian poets  wrote  common literature till 1950 by Dom Moraes , P.Lal, Nissim Ezekiel,  A.K. Ramanujan  and his poetry shows love for Indian culture. Indian cartoonist R. K. Laxman. Creator of the Common Man also presented  common literature .

1966- 1970 , We  find post  modernism  in  Indian  literary  works  but  we  can not  deny  effect  of  common literature.  Novelists  of  this  period  showed  power  of  common  literature,  characters  and  plots, background s  were  common  and  close  to  the  hearts  of  people.  We  can call them  Common Novels. Mulk  Raj  Anand  became the voice of the common people.

Untouchable (1935) , Coolie (1936) shows  reflection  of  common life in the  time  of British rule  in India. R.K. Narayan’s fictions  were  based on common people, hard works, failure, etc. His notable  works Malgudi Days, Swami and Friends ,The English Teacher.

1970-2000  Novelists like Anita  Desai , Salman Rushdie, Vikram Seth, Amitava  Ghosh, Arundhuti  Roy, Nirad. C. Chowdhury  showed  the  urge of common people, background, plots, themes like migration, agony, pain , city life, dilemma etc.

2001-2021

All the literary personalities  wrote their best.

NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA:

Roots   of  Common  Era  Literature   is  profound  in  America.             

Realism  in  the  America  came  before  1900s . So the common literature  was  already  there . The novels  that  time  showed  uprising  of   American  art,  music  and  literature. The  main  characteristics  were 

·         literature of the common place

·         literature of the common  man  character

·         literature of the common  life

·         literature of the everyday reality

·         literature of the common   background

·         Universal appeal

·         literature of the poor and middle class

·         literature of the ordinary language

 

War  was  the  prominent criterion of  recognition when  we  study  American  Literature. Before 1900s America  went  through  Civil wars, colonial  dominance  and  many ups and  downs. Naturally  literature  took  a  great  part  to  promote  American life and  it’s  ethics.  Due  to  a  strong  struggling  attitude  to  overcome  obstacles, country  men  pointed  out  lessons  from  war.  Americans  progressed  very  fast  than  other  countries  of  the  world. After   1900s,  literature  was  quite  powerful  and  people  showed  interest  in  writing  plays  and  novels.  Some famous  literary personalities of this period are:

William Dean Howells, Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, Henry James, Frederick Douglass, Mark Twain.

Alexander Pushkin was  from  the same period  and  he  also  believed  in  common literature. He wrote  poems  and plays, and novels  for  the  sake of  common people.  Pushkin’s background reflects same agony of war

In the year 2000 that  realism changed  into another term Hysterical realism which may have seen  as a study  of  postmodernism and it also deals with  common literature. 

(2001-2021) the realism is marked by state and system centric behavior. It is becoming  politically motivated and nation centric. But the  common  outlook is same as before.

1900s-1914s :  The period restored  by  the  common  people  and they  lived  life again with  same  compassion  and  eagerness. Common  literature  grew  up  there  also with  the  concept  hiring from  French people: Naturalism. Human nature  is  a  part  of  common literature. Common literature  can’t  develop without  raw  and  basic instinct  of  human nature. In  that  time  novelists  tried  to  portray  human  behavior in  their  stories.  Characters  of  these  novels  were  common men  or  women oppressed  by  society  and  other  forces  and  deeply  influenced  by  heredity  like that of the  common era novels . It  left  readers  in  a  trauma. Novels in Common  Era  also  revolves  round  uncertain  end. It started  by  Emile Zola that  led  American novelists to  write  more  novels. Common Era literature that  began after 2000 got  similarity  with  the  American  Naturalism .Like  Common literature Characters are  common , raw expressions or realistic approach  of  life. There  is no  classification  of  society. Major writers include Frank Norris, Stephen  Crane showed   urge  of  common people  of  that  time. Edith Wharton’s  The Age of  Innocence shows  the  problem of  marriage which  is  quite  similar  in  the  novels  of  Common Era  Literature.  21^st  century  which  is  known as  Common Era  shows  a  different  angle of  naturalism. It  has turned  into  common thinking . It’s  practiced now  with  artistic forms like  painting ,crafting, singing. In the common literary era  we  have  some  naturalists like Rein Arjukese, Greg Graffin.

 

 

 

 

 

 

One  line  common poems

One  line  poem  is  a  great  way   of  writing  poems. In Common Era  it  is  seen  as  the  chief  type  of  writing  poetry.  It  is  somehow  related  to  Micro  Poetry  and  Nano Poetry  which  shows  poet  as  powerful  influencer. Common literature  deals  with   such  one  line poems.  Most  probably  it  came  from  Western poets  and  now  it  is  common in Bengali  Literature  as well. Sourav  Sarkar  tried  to  inspire  poets  to  write  one line common poems. Certainly, now  in 2021, common poems are doing best  in  the  field  in  the  field  of  literature.

Structure   of  One  line  common poems

A. Line:  These poems are written in  one line.

B. Punctuations:  Poet can use  these punctuations.

End of a sentence:    (full stop) ( . )question mark ( ? )exclamation mark ( ! )ellipsis (. . .)

 or no punctuation at all.

To separate words :  comma ( , )semicolon ( ; )

To quote words :   single quotation marks ( ' ' ) double quotation marks ( " " )

To show connection:   parentheses ( ), brackets [ ] and braces { }  em dash ( — )

C. Stanza:  There  is  no  stanza  in  this  kind  of  poem.

D. Rhyme:  It  depends  upon  poetic  flow. One  line  common  poem  can  be  rhythmic  or it  can  not  be.

E. Theme:  Pain, Despondency, Crisis,  Self  Love,  Lack  of  identity, Search, Love,  Loss, Epidemic, Dilemma, anxiety, Belief, Anger, Suppression, Informative, Public, Digital, Suffocated  life,  Aims, Cruelty,  Mercy, loneliness, Ego etc.

Characteristics  of  common literature

After  2000 CE  poetry  became  a  choice  to  express  personal interests. It  became  common  for  others. There  is  no  truth  or  perfectness  pointed  out. Everything  seems  messy, fragmented ,strong  imagery of  daily  words , no  thought  provoking  ideas  or  skill  of presentation  can be  seen. Common poems were  directly  answered  questions , stories  were real and  sensational, serious  and  novels reveal  practicality  of  human mind  and behavior.

We  don’t   debate  upon  faith  in  this  common  era literature. It turns  into personal belief  which  changes with  time  and  personality. In  common  literature  it  is  agreed  that  each  of  us  possess  different  ability. Hence  we  must  respect  own  thoughts  and  others  also,  no  matter  what  country,  what  religion what  caste  you belong. In  the  post  modern  period before the common  literature period , people believed  in  systems, values , orthodoxy, tradition, morality  etc. but common  literature appreciated  multi cultural value  which  says external  experience  is  everything. In fact  we  learn  easily  from  these  experiences.  For  instance, writing  blogs  is  a  personal  experience  that  grows  with  external  observations.

In  common  literature period 2021 to 3000 we will pursue abstract  vision. This  vision will be generated  by  the  individuals and  they will try  to imbibe  the sense  of  the  age and put them in common poems, common stories, common novels , common prose, common plays. We will experience   a dwell  nature  of  belief . 

Previously  literature  used  to be  controlled and  author  centric. But in  common literature period  it  is  not  only  interpretation  but  also  public domain  literature  which  means anyone  can  criticize  the piece  of  work  directly. It is  due  to  digitalization  of  literature the  works  now  available  in  websites ,blogs etc.
